Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds is a 2017 nonfiction book by Adrienne Maree Brown, a writer, activist, facilitator, and movement leader. Though it is Adrienne’s first solo project, Emergent Strategy has been a movement bestseller since its launch. Inspired by Octavia Butler’s exploration of our relationship to change in the Parable series, Emergent Strategy is considered a guidebook for getting in right relationship with change and using our own nature and that of creatures beyond humans as our teachers. The book offers tips, tools, and strategies to approach social justice on individual, collective, and planetary scales. A core principle of emergent strategy is that transformation cannot occur until the people who comprise the movement are transformed. With this in mind, we’ll reflect on the connection between ourselves and our work, ways to operationalize Adrienne’s framework and engage in vulnerable self-reflection to create a more connected future.
